About the Artist/Ensemble

Anna Hogg is an artist and filmmaker working within a hybrid narrative-documentary framework to explore and tease apart the layered textures inherent in the act of telling a story. Much of her work addresses the context and history of a story, focusing on the transformations that manifest because of time, memory, adaptation, translation, preservation, censorship, or public opinion. In her films, the layers of a story become embodied through image and sound, light and movement, texture and form, gesture and place.

Her films have screened internationally, including the Kasseler DokFest,  Chicago Underground Film Festival, and Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. She was awarded the Jury prize for Best International Work at the 2017 WNDX Festival, and nominated for the Golden Key award at the 2017 Kasseler DokFest. She holds an MFA in Film & Video from the California Institute of the Arts and now teaches film history, art theory and practice, as well as film and video production and post-production.

Anna is committed to teaching from an interdisciplinary, non-hierarchical perspective that incorporates both practical experience and knowledge, as well as theoretical insight and critical thinking. She has worked with a variety of age groups, including undergraduate and graduate, high school, middle school, and elementary school.

Educational Program Description

City Walk: Video Poetics & Narrative
In this after-school program, students will learn about the filmmaking process and create short silent films to be installed as a part of an outdoor mini-film festival in the locality where the workshop takes place. In the first half of the course, students will learn about the filmmaking process from pre-production to post-production, through a combination of hands-on instruction and small group projects. In the second half of the course, students will work together to create short silent films inspired by an early 20th century documentary genre called city symphonies. The student’s city symphonies will then be installed along an outdoor walking route, which will serve as a mini-film festival and culmination event that can be attended by friends and family.

Digital Filmmaking: The Hero’s Journey
In this course, students learn about one of the quintessential story structures in narrative film – the hero’s journey, or Monomyth, as proposed by Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces. Students will work together to write, produce, and edit a narrative film that follows each of the steps of the hero’s journey. This course can be designed to fit into curricular standards for the arts or language arts.
