About the Artist/Ensemble

Project Locrea (from LO-ve and CREA-tivity) is a world-jazz fusion ensemble dedicated to creating and performing original compositions and contemporary arrangements inspired by folk music of different countries. Combining sound and instrumentation of world folk traditions with classical, jazz and contemporary music conventions, the project’s focus is to bring a better understanding and deeper connection between cultures in current days.

The ensemble’s eponymous first album received nominations and won 1st place in two WAMMIE 2022 (Washington Area Music Awards) categories – Best World Music Group
and Best World Music Song for their rendition of the Ethiopian folk song “Abet, Abet” featuring Munit Mesfin.

Project Locrea has performed at AMP by Strathmore (Bethesda, MD), Blues Alley (DC), Creative Cauldron (Falls Church, VA), Atlas Performing Arts Center (DC), Levine School
of Music, Casa Phoenix (DC), Culture Center at the Opera House (Havre de Grace, MD) and many others, and internationally – at the MACAO Youth Music Festival in
Macao, China.

Concert/Performance Description

This is the performance where you will be able to experience a Bulgarian folk song, hip hop drum grooves, Latin-American heat and children lullabies all in the same concert. An evening of eclectic music making that crosses cultural and musical boundaries, and fuses modern technologies with traditional folk instrumentation from around the world.

Technical Requirements

Two armless chairs, electrical outlets, sound system preferable but not required.

Educational Programs

The ensemble has gained enthusiastic audience appreciation and has contributed to the education of young musicians by sharing with them the values of creating music as well as the importance of one’s musical roots.

“Folk music and instruments of the world” – suitable for middle and high school students as well as adults. This program showcases the various instruments and techniques of Project Locrea, featuring examples of folk songs from the artists’ diverse musical cultures and history of the music and instruments.

“Finding your own voice in music” – suitable for middle and high school students as well as adults. This program tells the story of the creation and idea behind Project Locrea as a platform to create a deeper connection between people through music and a safe non-judgmental place for self-expression. Also as part of this program, the musicians will talk about finding their own voice in music and answer questions on the topic.
