Meet Your Commissioner

How have the arts impacted you?

From an early age, I have been a spectator and a participant in the arts. Seeing the Mona Lisa at The National Gallery, at seven, was unforgettable. Dance, music, and visual arts – as well as art education – have all been part of my life.

How have you seen the arts impact Virginians?

The arts impact everyone, either directly or indirectly. I have particularly enjoyed children awakening to the arts, as a docent at The Chrysler Museum and in my work at local art education centers in the more rural areas of Tidewater.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I danced with The Washington Ballet Company.

If you could be a world class artist, what would you be/do?

Be a concert pianist.

If you had to say what your superpower was, what might that be?

I would say I am a jack of all trades, master of none which ironically gives me “super” broad sensitivities.

Born in San Francisco, raised in the Washington D.C. area and now at home in Virginia Beach has provided a happy combination of experiences. I have enjoyed work at The Smithsonian Institution, The Baltimore Museum of Art and Rawls Museum Arts, an affiliate of the VMFA, that served five rural counties in Southside Virginia. As a former trustee at The Museum of Contemporary Art, in Virginia Beach, I learned about the struggles of mid-size museums and arts organizations and developed gratitude to those who provide support to keep them going. At the VCA I hope to help encourage art participation and appreciation at the grass roots level – where it really all begins.
