About the Artist/Ensemble

For over 24 years, Virginia Stage Company’s Education and Enrichment Departments have worked to create engaging theatre-based programs for adults and students of all ages, abilities, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Virginia Stage Company (VSC) is committed to creating programs and performances that reflect the diversity of our region while providing unique opportunities to interact with and learn from professional teaching artists, playwrights, designers, and performers. VSC believes that professional live theatre is a living process that can expand thinking, connect us to one another, and encourage artists and audiences for the future. Through our touring shows and workshops, VSC removes financial and geographic barriers to access, bringing professional, live theatre experiences to audiences in their communities.

Concert/Performance Description

Every Brilliant Thing

Ideal for Ages 13 and up

Duncan MacMillian’s extraordinary one-person play, Every Brilliant Thing, follows one person’s journey to find hope against the backdrop of their mother’s struggle with suicidal depression. The play blends comedy, improv, and audience interaction to tell a story that is funny, heartfelt, and ultimately life-affirming. Every Brilliant Thing is a one-hour show that can be adapted for audiences as small as 30 and as large as 300.

GreenBeats LIVE!

Ideal for Grades K-4

GreenBeats Live! is a 30-minute show designed to engage elementary-aged audiences in learning how to care for their environment. From ecological stewardship to the importance of recycling, students will bop along to the original script by Meredith Noel and songs by Skye Zentz written for WHRO Public Media’s popular YouTube series, GreenBeats. Join our hero Malia and her friends Skip the Straw, Scoop Dog Sam, and Billie the Squirrel, as she learns to make small changes to protect her neighborhood and the environment.

Tour Company Size: 4 (3 Actors, and 1 Actor/Stage Manager)

Technical Requirements

  • Access to electricity
  • Seating for Every Brilliant Thing is to be set up in the round before the tour company’s arrival
  • Performance space minimum of 10 ft x 15 ft
  • Minimum of one private dressing area
  • VSC provides a sound system; however, if the venue has a built-in sound system tour company needs access to one Lavalier mic, two wireless handheld mics, and the ability to connect a laptop’s headphone jack.
  • GreenBeats Live! has a specific technical rider available for each booking

Educational Programs

In-school workshops with professional teaching artists from VSC will activate your classroom and engage student’s imaginations through traditional theater techniques and exercises. VSC’s Education Department partners with teachers and administrators to provide opportunities to learn from professional performers while aligning programs to support Virginia’s Standards of Learning. These workshops enrich students’ social and emotional learning skills in a creative and inclusive environment while giving them first-hand arts experiences.

Spontaneous Storytelling – $180/50- 60 min.
Students will learn to create, communicate, and share stories using traditional theatre and creative exercises. Workshops will explore a variety of storytelling styles to ignite students’ imaginations and memories.

Playwriting – $180/50 – 60 min.
This workshop introduces students to the craft of writing for the theater, inspiring the next generation of playwrights. Students will explore scene structure, action, events, character voice, and dialogue.

Adapting Literature to the Stage – $180/50 – 60 min.
How do you consolidate a novel with its era-specific traditions into a two-hour theater piece for contemporary audiences? This workshop will take your classroom on the journey from page to stage.

Improv for the Classroom – $180/ 50- 60 min.
Does your classroom need help building a positive and collaborative community? Let the improv cornerstone of “Yes and…” transform how your students problem-solve. A VSC teaching artist will help activate imaginations, foster collaboration, and build positivity through classic improv games and exercises.

● Additional Every Brilliant Thing performances on the same day of original booking: $1,250
● GreenBeats Live! performances: $1,200
● Travel and accommodation expenses to be determined by service and location
