About the Artist/Ensemble
When most people think of Latin American music, they often gravitate towards pop music, overlooking the rich tapestry of classical compositions created by Latin American composers. However, there exists a profound and diverse library of classical music that showcases the cultural cross-pollination between Latin American rhythms, European, and North American folk traditions, enriching global music scenes.
Dr. Marjory Serrano-Coyer, a Venezuelan violinist, captivates audiences with her unique blend of classical technique and deep passion for Latin American music. She studied under prominent instructors in both Venezuela (including the renowned Venezuelan orchestral program, “El Sistema”) and the United States and has performed and given lecture recitals worldwide, collaborating with acclaimed conductors. Her extensive research into Latin American classical music, which began during her doctorate at the Catholic University of America, has uncovered numerous compositions that are almost completely unknown, providing a treasure trove of cultural contributions ready to be explored.
She performs regularly with her piano accompanist, Dr. Hsin-Yi Chen. Their latest album, “Sonatas Venezolanas,” showcases world premiere recordings of unique works for violin and piano by Venezuelan composers. While the combination of violin and piano in the form of sonatas is fairly common in Europe, it is relatively rare in Latin America, particularly for compositions from the early 20th century. This rarity makes these pieces exceptionally unique and valuable.
Dr. Marjory Serrano-Coyer aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the significant contributions of Latin American composers to classical music. Through performing chamber music repertoire that highlights the violin, delivering informative lectures, and facilitating cooperation with musicians worldwide, she offers not only technical mastery but also enriches audiences with the vibrant and lesser-known facets of Latin American classical music.
