Educational Background/Training
Sound Impact’s collective of musicians brings together their classical training with their passion for serving communities through musical engagement. Sound Impact artists perform regularly with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, The President’s Own Marine Band, Washington National Opera, and Wolf Trap Opera. Each project brings together a unique team of musical ambassadors. They’ve worked globally with youth in Brazil, Costa Rica, Haiti, Panama, Spain, Turkey, Zimbabwe, and across the USA. They hold degrees from the Eastman School, The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, and Yale University. As Teaching Artists, they have received training through Harvard University’s Arts and Passion-Driven Learning Institute, Lincoln Center Education’s Teaching Artist Development Lab, Maryland State Department of Education, and the Teaching Artist Teaching Institute. Our spoken word artist has a Master of Arts in Education and Human Development (M.A. Ed.) for Children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders from George Washington University. As an organization, Sound Impact artists train on trauma-informed practices and neuroscience for optimal brain development through arts engagement. About the Artist/Ensemble
Sound Impact is a women-led nonprofit dedicated to serving communities and igniting positive change in the United States and abroad through live performances, educational programs, and creative collaborations with other artists and art forms. SI takes high-caliber music outside the concert hall and puts youth empowerment at the center of music education. SI was founded in 2013 to use chamber music to connect, engage, and empower youth in schools, juvenile detention centers, and international communities. Sound Impact reaches over 10,000 young people annually through programs including in-school education concerts, classroom curriculum, interactive workshops, a virtual education series, instrumental training, incarcerated youth residencies, international festivals, and cultural exchange opportunities. Sound Impact is proud to partner with the Alexandria City Public Schools, The Clarice Performing Arts Center, Company E, Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center, Funsincopa (Panama), The Kennedy Center, Music at Kohl Mansion (CA), Moore Street Foundation, National Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra, Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center, Orange Music Society, and the Washington National Opera. Sound Impact has performed at the Department of Justice, Dumbarton Concerts, Embassy of Costa Rica, the Ethical Society in Philadelphia, The Kennedy Center, Mexican Cultural Institute, Mount Vernon, National Gallery of Art, Orange Music Society, and Spain Arts and Culture in Washington, D.C.
Educational Program Description
Time Travel Through Music Assemblies
The musicians of Sound Impact present an interactive time travel adventure concert exploring music’s role throughout history, including curriculum connections to global cultures, history/social studies, language arts, and social-emotional learning. A quartet of Sound Impact musicians combines live performances, storytelling, digital vignettes, and interactive activities for the students during the assemblies, which end with a Q&A session. Customized workshops offering musical instruction, creative program design, and side-by-side performance opportunities are available. Designed for k-6 students, aligned with VA Standards of Learning.
“Use Your Voice” Residencies
Three-day residencies at juvenile detention centers focusing on creative youth development by providing opportunities to increase self-confidence and tools for self-expression while combining creative writing, musical creation and collaboration.
