The VCA Announces 2023-2024 Artist Fellowship Award Recipients

The Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) announces the Artist Fellowship award recipients for 2023-2024. This year marks Printmaking as a singular and stand-alone discipline for the first time in 35 years, and Choreography for the first time in a decade. Between the two disciplines, the VCA awarded nine Fellowships and $45,000 to artists innovating and contributing to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“Artists are essential for a vibrant Virginia, and this Artist Fellowship program is a meaningful way to celebrate and support the individual artists of our state” said Margaret Hancock, Executive Director of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. “This year’s Fellows elevate Virginia – and the nine different communities from which they hail – through conceptual and technical print, contemporary dance, and overall creative expressions.”

The 2023-2024 Fellows hail from across the Commonwealth, their works spanning a wide range of multifaceted motifs that encompass environmental and social advocacy to language, cultural frameworks, and technology. The diverse range of artists weave their perspectives into a unique narrative of future possibilities. While drawing inspiration from cultural histories and the past, they contribute to a nuanced and interconnected dialogue between tradition and innovation.

Established in 1981, the VCA Artist Fellowship program recognizes the creative contributions of artists to the Commonwealth of Virginia by supporting their pursuit of artistic excellence. Each year, statewide experts and working artists serve as Advisory Panelists to review and recommend Fellowship recipients. Over the last 40-plus years, the Fellows program has swelled to include hundreds of prestigious artists across the performing, literary, and visual arts.

Fellowships are available to artists over 18 years of age who are Virginia residents. Funding in this category is highly competitive and specific arts disciplines are eligible for support each year on a rotating basis, dependent upon the amount of state available to the Commission. New disciplines for Artist Fellowships are announced each summer with applications going live in July.
