Artist Fellowships | Printmaking and Choreography

A limited number of fellowships are available to professional creative artists living in Virginia. Funding in this category is highly competitive. Specific arts disciplines are eligible for support each year on a rotating basis, depending upon the amount of state funding available to the Commission. Artists should confirm with Commission staff the select disciplines each year. 

Purpose

To recognize the creative excellence of individual Virginia artists and support their pursuit of artistic excellence. 

Description

A limited number of fellowships are available to professional creative artists living in Virginia. Funding in this category is highly competitive. Specific arts disciplines are eligible for support each year on a rotating basis, depending upon the amount of state funding available to the Commission. Artists should confirm with Commission staff the select disciplines each year. 

Discipline

FY24 Artist Fellowship disciplines are Printmaking and Choreography.

Eligible Applicants

  • A legal resident who possesses a valid Virginia driver’s license and/or pays income taxes in Virginia and/or is a registered Virginia voter 
  • Artists who plan to remain a Virginia resident during the grant period 
  • Artists who are 18 years of age 
  • Artists may receive only one fellowship from the Commission within any four-year period 

Assistance Amount

A limited number of artists will be considered for fellowship awards of up to $5,000 each. Artists are not required to provide matching funds.

  • Artistic Samples for Printmaking
    • Five (5) digital images of Printmaking work samples. Printmaking is defined as the transferring of images from a matrix into another surface. Printmaking techniques include lithography, etching, screen printing, woodblock, intaglio, letterpress, cyanotype, linocut, collagraph, engraving, aquatint, and monotype.
    • Digital Printmaking is not permitted.
    • Artistic samples must be created within the past five years.
    • Composite images, multiple images combined into a single image file and books are not permitted.
    • Acceptable file types: jpeg, png, and pdf.
  • Artistic Sample Information
    • Title, dimensions, year of completion, medium/technique, and a brief description of the work.

  • Artistic Samples for Choreography
    • Three (3) choreography video samples submitted as URL links. Choreography is defined as the art or practice of designing sequences of movements of physical bodies in which motion or form or both are specified.
    • Styles of choreography include, jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, Latin, African, swing, breakdancing, folk, ceremonial, historical, etc.
    • Choreography that is specific to a competitive sport is not permitted, i.e. cheerleading, synchronized swimming, ice-skating.
    • Samples are 5-15 minutes in duration. If your work sample exceeds 15 minutes, you may provide time stamps to designate an excerpt of the full-length video for staff and panel review.
    • Artistic samples must be recent and created within the past five years.
    • Applicant must be the choreographer of all submitted work samples. Works submitted for consideration may include the choreographer as a performer.
    • Group pieces (trio or larger) are encouraged.
    • Works that are co-created, co-directed, etc. are not eligible for submission.
    • Trailers, interviews, and highly edited videos are not permitted. Work samples are intended to document real-time sequences of works representative of a live experience that was publicly presented.
    • Ensembles are not eligible to apply.
  • Artistic Sample Information:
    • Title, year of completion, when and where the work was documented, where the work has been presented/performed, any roles beyond choreographer such as composer or dancer, time stamps (if applicable), and a brief summary of the work.

Criteria for Evaluating Applications

The Virginia Commission for the Arts is interested in innovative and impactful artistic practice that connects with the citizens of the Commonwealth. Applications are reviewed for the following criteria:

  • consistent quality of the artist’s work  
  • applicant’s record of professional arts activity and achievement as reflected in the application  
  • potential for the Fellowship to significantly advance the artist’s career  

Application/Review Process

  1. Applications are due October 2, 2023, by 5:00 p.m. EST.
  2. Commission staff reviews the applications and sends them to members of the statewide Advisory Panel to review prior to the Advisory Panel meeting.
  3. The Advisory Panel meets with two members of the Commission staff and a Commissioner and the panelists makes recommendations for Fellowship awards.
  4. The Board of the Commission reviews the Advisory Panel recommendations and takes final action on the applications.
  5. Applicants are notified of Commission action by email in late December.
  6. Payment to the artists will be made by January 15, 2024. Fellowship awards are reported as taxable income.
